Appetite for Life {Giveaway}

Almost any parent will tell you that their child doesn’t eat ___. It’s a rare child who will eat everything, but Stacey Antine, MS, RD‘s new book Appetite for Life proclaims to deliver a solution to the picky eater. I was a little skeptical, but having spent some time reading the articles and checking out the recipes, I have to admit, this book does look promising. As the founder of HealthBarn USA, an organization dedicated to introducing kids and their families to healthy eating habits and real food, Stacey knows what she’s talking about.

Appetite for Life begins with tips for introducing new foods to your kids, such as avoiding words like “yuck” in favor of a thumb up, thumb sideways and thumb down system for rating new foods. There is a great section for how to get your kids involved in cooking and growing their own food. This book has an excellent pantry list section, weekly meal planners and even educational activities for kids. Recipes are kid-approved and range from breakfast dishes like Sweet Potato Pancakes to more exotic fare for dinner like Coconut Shrimp with Pineapple Herb Dipping Sauce. Appetite for Life has a wonderful selection of healthy snacks for those after-school munchies and a healthy, but delicious array of dessert choices.


The kind folks at Harper Collins have provided three copies of this lovely book for us to giveaway. We’re pairing these books with a package of our Flaxseed Meal, Buckwheat Flour and Cornmeal so you can try this delicious recipe (one of the author’s favorites) for Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes right away.

To enter, tell us what your least favorite food was as a kid. Me? I loathed lima beans and would pick them out of every dish my poor mom prepared with them. I’m not sure why exactly, but they were my nemesis in the food world. We’ll pick three winners randomly from all who enter by 11:59 pm on 09/09.

Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes

  • 2/3 cup Buckwheat Flour
  • 1/3 cup Cornmeal
  • 3 Tbsp packed Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp ground Flaxseeds
  • 1-1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 large Egg Whites
  • 1-1/2 cups Low-Fat (1%) milk
  • ½ tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Blueberries
  • Maple Syrup or Agave Nectar


1. In a large bowl, stir together flour, cornmeal, brown sugar, ground flaxseeds, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.

2. Add egg, egg whites, milk, and vanilla to flour mixture, and stir until moistened. Add blueberries and stir until blended.

3. Heat a nonstick griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Pour batter by ¼ cup onto the hot griddle or skillet. Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top, about 4 minutes. Turn over and cook a few minutes longer, until underside is golden. Transfer pancakes to a plate; keep warm. Repeat until all batter is used.

4. Serve with pure maple syrup or agave nectar.

Makes 6 servings (2 pancakes per serving)

  1. I HATED green peas! But only when they were cooked and on their own. Pea soup was great, but my mother didn’t dare put a spoonful of peas on my plate – yuck! I love Bob’s Red Mill, so this would be awesome 🙂

  2. I’d have to say cooked carrots. Something about cooking them just totally ruined the taste for me. I preferred them raw; I suppose that’s a good thing. My own kids actually have the same issue. 🙂

  3. Great giveaway! I despised carob. It was absolutely my least favorite food item as a child. We were not allowed to have regular chocolate or sugar, so this was the substitute. The thought creeps me out to this day.

  4. I remember hiding canned peas around the edge of my plate, thinking I could escape from eating them. Not so lucky! And why did we eat canned peas when we grew up in a small town in No. Idaho with gardens all over the place? Only my Mother can answer, and she is no longer with us!! Yucky peas!!!

  5. I second the vote for lima beans, but I also just couldn’t choke down creamed corn. Still can’t eat the stuff!

  6. Pancakes…they were a special treat. And the fried onions served with liver. Hated the liver!

  7. My least favorite food as a child was Brussell Sprouts. Now I find that I enjoy them flavored with fresh mint sauce.
    I would love to have a copy of the appetite for life booklet.

  8. It is hard for me to pick my least favorite food as a child. I am told if it wasn’t bread, tacos or sloppy joes I wouldn’t have anything to do with it. I guess I deserve my 2 outrageously picky eating children. What goes around comes around!

  9. I hated canned salmon. My parents would buy it and then make sandwiches with the salmon. Oh, how I hated those sandwiches! To this day, I refuse to eat any sort of salmon-fresh or canned.

    Onions! I would refuse to eat anything that had onions in them. I also would not cut them, because I was not fond of the smell and the way they make your eyes water. I hated everything about them, but now I love them! They are so flavorful!

  11. I didn’t like cooked celery. I’d pick it out of my moms stew but I would love to have a copy of the appetite for life booklet.

  12. Absolutely lima beans.
    And shredded coconut — my brother used to have my mom mix that into his frosting for his birthday cake just because he knew I hated it. And it wasn’t because he loved coconut, he just liked everything. My mom allowed it because we each got to pick whatever we wanted to have. Needless to say, that’s not allowed with my kids!

  13. Any type of whole beans, lima, pinto, black, ect.

    As I have aged they all are great to eat. I think it was due to what kids are exposed to. I took my kids to authentic Mexican food other day, they had whole pinto beans insted of re-fried beans with cheese. They loved the whole beans once they tried them but they were use to what the restaurant would serve.

  14. I really disliked steak. I think that it was the way that my father cooked it (rare with no seasoning) because I don’t mind it now.

  15. The only thing I refused to eat as a kid was spaghetti squash. It was the only time I flat-out refused to eat more than 2 bites of something.

  16. I hated cream of mushroom soup. money was really tight and one lunch I just couldn’t choke down a bowl of cream of mushroom soup. Even now there are few recipes that I won’t substitute a different cream of ___ soup instead of cream of mushroom.

  17. My least favorite food growing up would be butternut squash. I can’t get past the texture of it. My mother forced me to eat some of it as a kid and I’ve never forgotten it. Gross!

  18. I hated beets. Something about the dirt taste. I like them a little now when well prepared but can’t say I exactly seek them out.

  19. I liked most vegetables as a kid. I did not like Okra at all. I now LOVE Okra and my kids hate it, lol.

  20. Stuffed cabbage…I found the smell of it pungent and always picked out the meaty stuffing out of it. However, now, as an adult, I put enough fresh herbs in the pot to reduce the cabbage smell and actually like the dish!

  21. I hated olives and I still do, when I see my uncles they still remind me when they tried to give me an olive and spit it out.
