What could be better than a cyclocross Halloween? You’ve got rain, mud, costumes and steaming hot steel cut oats… could you really hope for more? How about dogs in costumes and crazy bikes? Last weekend was the annual two-day Portland Cross Crusade Halloween bash held in Astoria. While costumes were not required, they were encouraged and several riders donned them for both days of racing. Sunday was official costume day and riders dressed as everything from chickens, knights and bears to matadors, synchronized swimmers and giraffes. Some of the best costumes we saw were Pee Wee Herman, Sloth from The Goonies (it IS Astoria after all), a family of Super Mario characters with Baby Toad and one team even dressed as the signature orange obstacles common to Cross Crusade races. The giraffe was pretty good and I personally enjoyed the cops from Reno 911.

Hey you guys...

Hey you guys...

Thanks to everyone who came out to the races, we had a great time slinging oats, trading stories and making new friends. Our racers did great this time, even if it wasn’t as well as they hoped- no one got hurt and everyone had fun. We raised almost $250 for the Community Cycling Center (thanks, guys!) bringing us to over $800 for the year. We look forward to seeing y’all next weekend at the PIR for race 8. Check out more photos from the race at our Flickr page.

I'd like to think he did this because he ate his oats before racing.
