National Oatmeal Month and a Giveaway

January is national oatmeal month. Did you know that more people eat oats in January than any other month? (At least, according to some sources.) I have trouble buying it based on how often we talk to our customers about eating oatmeal. I’ve always known our customers are special- they eat oats all year round, many almost every day!

Whether you’re a once-in-a-while oatmeal eater or the everyday sort, January is a great time to celebrate oatmeal! Most of us are already thinking about eating better and after spending almost 6 weeks indulging in holiday foods of every variety, oatmeal is good way to clean house.

Oats are not just delicious and soothing, but they also have some special qualities that provide incredible health benefits.  Oats have been proved to reduce cholesterol and they’re a great source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.

Oats contain soluble fiber, which soaks up cholesterol in the intestines and prevents it from being absorbed, eventually carrying it out of the body. The body recognizes this decrease of cholesterol in the intestines and responds by pulling cholesterol out of the bloodstream to replace the cholesterol that was removed from the intestines (aren’t our bodies amazing sometimes?). As a result, the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream goes down and so does the risk of heart disease!

  1. I love oatmeal because it is healthy and a great way to start the day. It keeps you full and energized without weighing you down. Its also delicious with cinnamon and banana.

  2. Rolled oats w/ cinnamon, flax seed, dried cranberries, walnuts, blackstrap molasses…and just a little half & half … yum yum… Jump starts my day !!

  3. I’ve been feeding my three kids oatmeal since they were old enough to eat it. With raisins, crasins, walnuts and banana breakfast tastes like cookies, but with no added sugar. Thank you oatmeal! 🙂

  5. This is my Nana’s Oatmeal, haven’t had it in over 50 years, Good oatmeal is ageless, and finely it has come home to me. Bob’s Red Hill Oatmeal not only warms my body but also my heart and soul

  6. I’m note well versed in haiku’s but I do love your oatmeals!

    Recipe: Equal parts oatmeal and water, cook til tender add a pad of butter and a splash of almond milk. Done!

    • @BadRock, if you want to enter a haiku the formula is simple. First line: 5 syllables; Second line: 7 syllables; Third line: 5 syllables. That’s a very simple formula, but there are other forms. 🙂

  7. I love oatmeal because there are so many things you can put in it! My favorite is mashed up banana and a little butter. Yum yum! I also love eating dry oatmeal 🙂

  8. We love to eat oats for breakfast. We use coconut oil and blueberries for a healthy and filling breakfast. SO Yummy!

  9. I love oatmeal because it’s the only breakfast that keeps me from snacking all morning long. I cook mine in skim milk, with raisins, vanilla and cinnamon. Sometimes I use sliced bananas and chopped nuts.

  10. If you mix oatmeal with no added sugar applesauce, it bulks it up big time, plus it gives it a natural sweetener. This way if you are on Weight Watchers, it’s a great way to get in more ‘free’ fruit.

  11. I love oatmeal because my childhood sweetheart husband of 47 years makes it for ME ! He also makes it for the grandchildren and that too has become a family tradition when we are together. What fun to share a nutritious breakfast with them !

  12. I love nice pure organic oatmeal. It’s filling, warm on a cold day, healthy, and you can do so many things with it. I like organic soy butter & Himalayan pink salt, mmmm! And don’t get me started on how delicious my whole wheat organic “Tollhouse” cookie recipe is with oatmeal in it!!!

  13. I love oatmeal because when I was very young my Mom would make it for me with fruit in it. We had a large lot of land so we had lot of apple, pears and all kinds of berrys. Mom said it is good for you and was very inexpensive. I give it to my kids and now all 3 have a love for oatmeal! Thanks mom

  14. I LOVE oatmeal. It’s amazing in that a bowl of oats with a little brown sugar and cinnamon holds me over for the morning, not to mention being nutritionally rich and delicious!

    My husband & I try & eat oatmeal everyday. I buy two kinds. His favorite, which is the quick cooking & my favorite, which is the extra thick rolled oats. He likes “mushy” & I like “bite & texture”. Our 2 year old grandson loves Papa’s oat meal & always wants more (papa likes to “doctor” his up quiet a bit more than me.) the health benefits are wonderful. Just knowing how good oatmeal is for us makes it all that more delicious! Very satisfying….holds us until lunch. Nothing but BOB’S RED MEAL, of course! Thanks Bob!

    I have a delicious recipe for Buckwheat Pancakes using oatmeal. it’s a little lengthy so I won’t post unless someone would like it. THE best pancakes you’ve ever tasted & so healthy!

  18. There is nothing like hot oatmeal in the morning, to fill me up. Milk, with brown sugar and sometimes sprinkles of cinnamon. Yum.

  19. I do not what I would do without steel cut oatmeal. I make 2 cups at a time and it is a go to staple. A little brown sugar, blueberries, walnuts or granola. It is the best.

  20. I love oatmeal because it is filling and nutritious. I know if I have a bowl in the morning, I can make it through until lunch without snacking.

  22. Oatmeal, my favorite breakfast. I use whole milk and after it’s cooked, I add butter and brown sugar. Yummy!!

  25. I love Oatmeal because it’s easy to make, filling and you can do so much with it. Sweetener/milk or add fruit to it for a huge meal. And of course make nommy cookies 🙂

  26. I love oatmeal with cream, butter and sugar. Oatmeal cookies are my favorite too. I especially love the Gluten Free Oats by Bob’s Red Mill. I could not have oatmeal for 7 yrs until I found Bob’s Gluten Free Oats. Thanks

    OK, so here goes nothing (and thanks for the reminder that today was the last day to enter because I forgot!!!)

    And I don’t “think” it’s yummy, I KNOW it is because I came up with the recipe years ago. The really cool thing about it is it’s a recipe that even my oatmeal hating hubby will eat AND enjoy.

    Entry #3 fact about oatmeal – it’s awesome for not just the inside of your body but the outside too. I have horribly sensitive skin and suffer from many skin issues. Oatmeal baths and scrubs are a wonderful thing. Drug free, inexpensive and very versatile.

    Coffee is good but,
    A warm bowl of hot oatmeal
    Really warms the soul.

  29. I eat oatmeal every morning! I never seem to tire of it, and topped with blueberries and sliced bananas, it keeps me feeling full longer than any other breakfast item! YUM!

  30. Oats are a wonderful grain that you can eat as several different types of cereal, both hot and cold in the morning.

    If you have hypoglycemia (like I do) or diabetes steel cut oats are very low on the glycemic index. That takes a lot of the hassle out of balancing carbs and proteins at breakfast.

  31. Oatmeal is a simple and healthy breakfast option. My toddler has fun inventing different oatmeal creations using nuts, dried fruits, spices, and even sprouts! We also use it in baking and health care…we <3 oatmeal in our family 🙂
