October Unprocessed 2012 {Giveaway}

As the days grow shorter and the nights cooler, Fall loom foremost in my mind. With Fall comes hot soups and fresh apples, the harvest moon and pumpkin-flavored confections, and, of course, October Unprocessed with Eating Rules. In it’s third year, October Unprocessed again asks us to reevaluate how we eat and see if we can cut back on the processed junk so readily available at grocery stores and restaurants nationwide.

October Unprocessed challenges us to spend all 31 days of October eating mindfully, tempting us to choose whole foods instead of amalgamations of chemicals and fillers. The challenge is certainly not for everyone, but many of us at the mill have found it to be a refreshing change of pace and a surprisingly enlightening food experience. Personally, I was surprised at how often (and how easily) processed foods came across my plate with no thought at all on my part.

What does “unprocessed” mean in this challenge? To quote Andrew from Eating Rules, “Unprocessed food is any food that could be made by a person with reasonable skill in a home kitchen with whole-food ingredients. He calls this the “Kitchen Test.”

The point of this challenge is not to rise to the top of your social circle playing the “I’m a food saint” game, but to eat consciously and mindfully. There are some foods that will be near impossible to cut out of your life that probably don’t pass the kitchen test. The goal is to make that choice deliberately and know that you are choosing to include that food. Of course, mistakes will happen and that’s okay too. (Try eating out and avoiding white sugar and white flour for a month!) You’re your own judge in this game and the grand prize is a higher awareness of what you eat every day.

    we eat an organic, vegan diet in our household, but i am super excited to see if we can make a few more conscious food choices throughout the month!

  3. I took the pledge! My biggest weakness will be when I am hungry and want something quick to eat so I will have to plan ahead and have foods ready that aren’t processed!

  4. I’ve signed up, the past couple of weeks I’ve eliminated a lot of processed foods from my diet and started to cook more, it’ll be a challenge to find substitutes for certain things I eat though.

  5. I took the OU pledge a couple of weeks ago and came across this post while doing a little preparation–looking for cookie recipes with only unprocessed ingredients! Looking forward to a month of better eating.

  7. I have taken the Pledge and accepted the Challenge! As a Pagan, this is the time of year we harvest what we planted, and eat of the fruit (and veggies!) of our labors!

  8. This will be the third year I’ve taken the challenge. I’m not usually a healthy eating kinda guy but I do like to know what I’m putting in my mouth and why. It’s helped me look past what they want me to see and eat consciously.

  9. I took the pledge! We don’t eat a lot of processed foods (simply can’t afford it). But occasionally, I love pizza! Guess I will just have to go without in October!

  10. I try to stay processed free…. I have to for my family, I love them to much to not have amazing food to offer them. Plus it tastes better using whole and organic food!

  11. I have taken the pledge and have posted it on my Facebook page and I have at least 2 friends who have taken the pledge with me. I am surprised at the amount of food in my cabinets that will not pass the test even though I am passionate about eating wholesome foods1 I will be research recipes and alternatives for those foods that will be cut!
