Announcing the Third Annual Spar for the Spurtle Finalists

Our team of illustrious judges had their work cut out for them this again this year. With over 80 entries in Spar for the Spurtle, narrowing it down to just three finalists meant watching a lot of videos! There was a lot of discussion about whether the dish could really be done in 30 minutes and how it would be received in Scotland. With five years of Golden Spurtle competition under their belt, the judges felt confident about what the Scottish judges are looking for in a winning dish. While I was not privy to the internal discussion, I know they had a very hard time narrowing it down to just three winners and could have easily picked ten.

I think the judges chose well with these three winners. Each dish is different and demonstrates a creative use of oats, proving, once again, that oats are not just for breakfast. We’ll be working to get recipes for each video and put them up on our site soon. Without further ado, here are our finalists. Congratulations to the three finalists and our most sincere thanks to everyone who entered!

  1. I was really impressed by the Caledonian Dolmades. The flavor profiles were really creative. I especially loved the use of Kale leaves replacing the traditional Grape leaves! I can’t wait to try this recipe on my family. I know they will enjoy it!

  3. That’s a tough question! It is a tie for me between the Dolmades and the egg rolls! All 3 are excellent recipes and I wish them the best of luck!!!

  4. These all look so delicious, it was hard to choose! I’m going to say Golden Eggrolls because 1) I nearly licked my screen when I saw the pic, 2) it’s like a crepe you can eat with one hand, and 3) I can imagine my entire family digging in!

  5. Having reviewed the three finalists’ videos when ‘hungry’, going to choose the Caldedonian Dolmades! Ummm, good, and good for you!

  6. I love the Scottish ‘spurtle’. Just FYI my surname is also German for a wooden crocheting or knitting bobbin, that one must use a handful of at a time: a “kloppel” Kloppeling is an ongoing pasttime, with festival and celebration in Kansas (the one I know about). My, wouldn’t I love a ‘spurtle’ to go along with my ‘kloppels’ :) I love Bob’s Red Mill emphasis on respect for people and food :0

  7. I love the steel cut oats, but Bob’s Red Mill products are all quality products. I am eager to try all of these delicious recipes…and the spurtles, with the recipes from my absolutely favorite, creative mom and cook, LSQ! The Buttered Oats have my vote!
