Mystery Solved: Packing Peanuts {Updated}

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

UPDATE: 12/19/14: Our packing peanuts are now made with sorghum, instead of potato starch.

If you’ve ever received a package from us, you’ve likely encountered some of our packing peanuts (see right). Over the years, we’ve received many emails from concerned customers with questions ranging from environmental impact to worries about whether the peanuts have gluten in them.

The packing peanuts we use in our shipments are made from sorghum and will completely dissolve in water, making them both environmentally and allergen friendly. They are biodegradable and non-toxic, so if your dog is like mine and happens to chow one down, don’t sweat it. The peanuts are not food-grade, but they will decompose unlike those nasty Styrofoam peanuts. Next time you receive a box of these peanuts, you can rest a little easier knowing they won’t hurt you or the environment.

  1. very much appreciate this. my dog just had a few of these packing peanuts and I was panicked until I read this blog entry about your them being made of starch. awesome.

  2. It’s so cool that you use these biodegradable peanuts! I think that to get the full use out of them you all might try putting a little stamp on the inside of the boxes or on the invoices which informs the purchaser, so that they don’t end up in the garbage stream (although they are a thousand times better than normal packaging peanuts even when they are in the garbage stream).
    Thank you for being so environmentally conscious!

  3. OK this may seem weird but I have been looking all over my local area and online to but this type of packing peanut. Do you know of where I can buy this type in a small quantity, or if I can possibly buy a box filed with peanuts and no merchandise? Thank you for any help.
