Bob’s Dedication to the Future

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles, Health

The story of Bob’s Red Mill cannot be told without first talking about Bob and what makes Bob so special. When Bob and his wife, Charlee, first thought to open what was once a small company, it was with the inspiration to provide wholesome, whole grain flour to a community that lacked the resource. What started with a mission to feed their three boys nutritious foods turned into a lifelong drive to feed the world high quality, whole grain foods. Bob and Charlee poured their hearts into Bob’s Red Mill which started slowly, but began to grow quickly and continues to grow to this day.

A walk around the mill with Bob reveals how much he values his employees. He knows the name of each of his 200+ employees and he probably knows what their spouse does, how old each of their children are and how long that employee has worked for him. He’s that kind of boss. He’s the kind of boss that keeps employees for 25+ years because he gives them challenges and pushes them to grow, and rewards them well for making the grade. He’s the kind of boss that you don’t ever want to leave. And Charlee? Meeting her once is enough to love her forever.

When Bob and Charlee announced that Bob’s Red Mill was to become employee-owned in February of 2010, surprise was the public reaction, but for the employees this was just another sign of his huge heart and unrelenting generosity. This is what Bob does. He’s not like other CEOs. He doesn’t want to sell the company in a get-rich-quick scheme. He wants to ensure that his employees have jobs and that we will keep Bob’s Red Mill running and continue to providing healthy foods to the world.

Today an announcement was made that will forever shape our community—whether you live here in Portland or across the world, Bob and Charlee have taken steps to ensure that their lifelong mission will be fulfilled. Today’s announcement is the third in a series of incredibly generous investments that Bob and Charlee are making in the health of our nation.

It started small, if you can say that, last January with a donation of $1.3 million to NCNM, the National College of Natural Medicine here in Portland, Oregon, one of the most prestigious natural medicine colleges in the country. A few weeks later, a gift of $5 million was given to Oregon State University to establish the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition and Preventive Health. Today, it was announced at a press conference that Bob and Charlee have pledged $25 million to OHSU, Oregon Health and Science University.

The pledge will establish the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness at OHSU. Its ambitious aim: to confront the rampant health problems caused by unhealthy eating and inadequate nutrition through cutting-edge research and community outreach. With these three commitments to Oregon’s top nutrition science institutes, Bob and Charlee are ensuring that their mission to improve the health of our nation will continue to thrive.

This is all good and well, but it’s not what makes this story special to us at Bob’s Red Mill. What makes this story extra special is where this money came from. When our company went employee-owned last year, the company had to essentially buy itself from Bob’s business partners. Instead of doing what so many people would do, like buying vacation homes, exotic cars and luxury vacations, Bob and Charlee committed to give their money to these educational institutions to make our world a better place. To help the institutes build a connection between health and nutrition in the minds of Americans; to fix the diabetes epidemic and keep our children healthy; to create a hopeful future for our nation. Bob is that kind of boss.

Behind the Scenes with Bob and Charlee

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

For the last two years, Bob’s Red Mill has released a desk calendar. We send it out to some of our friends and business partners as part of our holiday greeting in December. We don’t print very many and it’s likely you’ve never seen one. The last two years we featured great artwork and photography of our products and facility. This year we are doing something totally different and a bit more fun, if you ask me. We’re featuring our employees doing what they love. This is includes all sorts of things, after all, we’re a pretty eclectic group.  You’ll see folks doing what makes them passionate, everything from playing a round of golf to swing dancing!

We all know that Bob is passionate about stone milling, but he’s also very passionate about his other loves- his beautiful wife Charlee and his two Model-A Fords (Gertie and Clara). Here are some shots from his photo shoot last week.

Charlee and Bob are all smiles for the camera. You can see Gertie peaking out from behind them. She is Bob's convertable Model-A.

Aren't they something special? Still in love after 60 years!

Happy Father’s Day

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads and dads-to-be out there! Thank you for all you do to enrich our lives, to uplift us, to push us to the next level of greatness and for just being generally awesome! It’s no easy feat being a dad and we appreciate it!

Bob’s father, Ken, delivered Hostess products for a time when Bob was child. We’ve been loving this photo (albeit a bit grainy) around the office lately.

Beyond Whole Grains: The Ride Show

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

If you’ve heard much about Bob, you probably know he owns not one, but two Model-A’s. His original is named Clara and his new(er) Roadster is named Gertie. Both cars are beyond beautiful, if you like that sort of thing, and a heck of a lot of fun to ride in. We have a local show in Portland called The Ride Show hosted by Nik Miles. The show airs on NW32. The point of all of this is that Bob was asked to show off Gertie on the show. I’m not sure when the show will air, but we got a great photo and we wanted to share it with you. Nik is on the left. Happy Friday!

Caption Contest

by Cassidy Stockton in Contests, Featured Articles

Yesterday afternoon, I came across this photo of Bob. I immediately thought this would make a great photo for a caption contest. Bob was so excited that he insisted on picking the winner himself and felt it imperative that we also do a caption contest for a second photo—this one of his assistant, Nancy Garner. To say Nancy is Bob’s assistant does not nearly do her job justice. She works tirelessly with Bob on all of his projects and accompanies him to speaking engagements, trade shows and events of every variety. They can often be found playing piano together at our World Headquarters or enjoying lunch at our Whole Grain Store.

Here’s the contest:

Write a caption for one or both photos here or on Facebook. I will post both photos on Facebook and you must enter the caption as a comment under the photo or it will not be counted. Let’s keep it clean; any inappropriate comments will be deleted. Bob and Nancy will choose the captions they like best and the winners will receive a $50 Bob’s Red Mill Gift Card that can be used on our website. On your comment, be sure to indicate Caption A for Bob’s photo and Caption B for Nancy’s photo.  This photo was taken for an ad, here is the actual caption that will be used: “I want you… to eat whole grains.” Get creative, get funny, but don’t use that caption. Bob and Nancy will pick the two winners on 03/31/11 and I will announce them here, on April 1st.

ESOP: A year later

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

Tuesday, February 15th, marked the one-year anniversary of Bob’s announcement that he was handing ownership of Bob’s Red Mill to his employees. When the announcement was made, we had no idea how inspiring people would find this. Obviously, the employees were blown away by the announcement, but the rest of the country seemed to follow suit, as if they, too, had received a piece of Bob’s Red Mill.

After a year of reflection and still quite a lot of interest from the media and our customers, I feel privileged to work at Bob’s Red Mill and so lucky to call these people my family. This story is more unique than most of us realized at the time. There are only about 1100 employee-owned companies in our country. This is truly the exception of how to do business, where the rule seems to be “sell the company and move on.”

A question I get at every event I attend is “Who runs the company now?” That’s easy, Bob! Of course he still runs the company and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Truly, it’s a team effort that involves everyone in this company, but Bob is still the thriving ring-leader of this whole grain circus. We now have a team of stakeholders who help steer decisions that affect our company, but the day-to-day aspects of our company haven’t changed a bit. Our stakeholders are just as vested in the success and quality of our brand as the rest of us and have no intention of changing the way we do business.

If anything has changed, it’s the incredible pride each employee takes in their job. Knowing how seriously people take their jobs here, I didn’t think it was possible, but I’m certain that everyone is working harder than ever to do their best. I’ve never worked somewhere that people loved so much. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you with a beaming smile why they love their job here. It’s an incredible place to call home and I can’t wait to see where the future takes us.

Thank you for making this possible. Bob wouldn’t have had anything to save or pass on to us, if not for you. Each time you buy a product, you cast a vote that affects the world. Thank you for voting for us and a world where whole grains and health take priority.

Thank you from all of us at Bob's Red Mill

Bob’s New Mill Stones

by Cassidy Stockton in Featured Articles

Bob would like to share this article he wrote for our employee newsletter with you, our valued customers. Here is the article in his own words.

Two of our 10 brand new stone mills fresh from Denmark.

Like the solid old earth itself, whole grains have been here a long time.  Grains have supplied a wholesome diet since creation.  Years ago when, through my wife Charlee, I discovered the profound need for whole grains in everyone’s diet including my own, I have had a strong desire to produce those healthy grains.  That desire has been fulfilled in Bob’s Red Mill, of which you are all a part.  Having a dream about something is one thing – fulfilling a dream with reality is another.  As our company has developed over many decades and I take stock of how far we’ve come, it has certainly occurred to me that I have made real progress on those early dreams.

Now, in my 8th decade, all that’s left is to insure the continuation of it all.  So here is what I’ve done recently.  We have a 35 year lease with an option to buy this property effective just three years ago.  Our unique and wonderful stone mills are the heart of our production and we are currently running 10 stone mills around the clock.  This past month we received from the manufacturer in Denmark our order of additional and replacement milling equipment.  We now have 10 new, complete stone mills and 12 sets of new replacement millstones.  We are not going to run out of mills to make our products or the place we make it in for a long time!

Six of our 12 new mill stones.

With our Employee Stock Ownership Plan in place, there is every reason to feel confident that Bob’s Red Mill will continue to supply whole grains to the world for a long, long time and keep our wonderful employees busy doing it!

To your good health,
